Why are Li-ion batteries considered dangerous?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lithium-ion batteries are classified as <strong>hazardous materials<\/strong> according to international regulations (<strong>UN 3480<\/strong> or <strong>UN 3481<\/strong>, depending on whether they stand alone or are integrated into a piece of equipment).<br>They present a <strong>risk of fire or overheating<\/strong> in the event of shock, short-circuit or improper packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why they are subject to <strong>shipping restrictions<\/strong> by air, and sometimes require <strong>specific statement<\/strong> in sea freight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udeeb 2. Air transport: what IATA regulations say<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The transport of lithium-ion batteries by air is governed by the following regulations <strong>IATA DGR (Dangerous Goods Regulations)<\/strong>.<br>Here are the key points to know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd39 A. In carry-on or checked baggage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Not permitted in the hold<\/strong> if the battery is stand-alone (not installed in a device).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cabin-mounted<\/strong> only for <strong>less than 100 Wh<\/strong>, within the limit of <strong>two extra rooms per person<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The terminals must be <strong>protected against short circuits<\/strong> (caps, insulating tape, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd39 B. For professional ROVs (&gt; 100 Wh)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of ROV batteries (e.g. Blue Robotics 18 Ah \/ 14.8 V \u2248 266 Wh) exceed this threshold.<br>\u27a1\ufe0f Elles <strong>cannot travel with you<\/strong>.<br>You have to go through a <strong>authorized carrier for dangerous goods (ADR \/ IATA)<\/strong> such as DHL Dangerous Goods, FedEx DG or DB Schenker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd39 C. Documents to be supplied<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test <strong>UN 38.3<\/strong> (mandatory for all air travel)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Class 9 hazard labels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IATA Lithium Ion Batteries declaration\u201c<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26a0\ufe0f D. In practice: the final decision rests with the company<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if all IATA rules are respected, <strong>the airline and the crew are the sole judges of the acceptance of the equipment on board<\/strong>.<br>Security services or pilots can <strong>refusing to ship lithium batteries<\/strong>, They may also decide to sell their products, even if they are compliant, if they consider the risk to be too high, or if the company's internal policy forbids it.<br>\ud83d\udc49 It is therefore <strong>We strongly advise you to contact the company before departure<\/strong>, Send us the MSDS sheet and the exact battery pack references for written approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2699\ufe0f Real-life case: the logistics challenge in Maputo, Mozambique<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of our customers recently ordered <strong>two lithium batteries for ROV mission in Maputo<\/strong>.<br>After obtaining <strong>carrier validation<\/strong> and respected <strong>all IATA procedures<\/strong>, We shipped the batteries through the international logistics network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the realities of the field have shown just how complex this type of shipment can be: <strong>17 successive airlines refused to accept the package<\/strong>, despite the complete conformity of the file.<br>Freight was therefore <strong>returned to our warehouse in France<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to our <strong>international partner network<\/strong>, we were able to <strong>respond positively to customer needs<\/strong> by reorganizing the expedition: two batteries were <strong>sent from a country neighboring Maputo<\/strong>, allowing the mission to proceed without delay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 This case illustrates perfectly that, even in total compliance with standards, <strong>logistical constraints and local decisions may impose alternative solutions<\/strong>, and <strong>experience in the field and an international network<\/strong> make all the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2693 3. Sea freight: a more flexible alternative<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For longer shipments (ROV + batteries + chargers), the <strong>sea transport<\/strong> is often preferred:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fewer quantity restrictions; ;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Possibility of shipping batteries integrated into equipment; ;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Longer lead time, but <strong>reduced cost and administrative burden<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, sea transport is subject to the <strong>IMDG code (International Maritime Dangerous Goods)<\/strong>.<br>This means <strong>pack batteries according to UN standards (certified packaging, drop and resistance tests)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udce6 4. packaging and labelling: don't improvise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Good packaging is essential for compliance and safety:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705 <strong>Use UN 3480 \/ UN 3481 approved packaging<\/strong><br>\u2705 <strong>Separate each battery<\/strong> in an insulated compartment<br>\u2705 <strong>Affix the official labels:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cLithium Ion Battery - UN 3480\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cCargo Aircraft Only\u201d (if applicable)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Class 9 label (various hazardous materials)<br>\u2705 <strong>Include inside :<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Data sheet \/ MSDS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sender and recipient details<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copy of IATA \/ IMDG declaration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf0d 5.
